In Hung Yen province, a notable surge in the popularity of 'vai trung,' or egg-shaped litchis, has been observed. These litchis, distinguished by their size, have become a subject of interest on social networks. Despite their higher price compared to other varieties, the demand for these litchis remains strong.
At the orchards, prices range from VND60,000 to VND100,000 per kilogram, with retail prices significantly higher, especially in urban areas such as HCM City and Binh Duong, where they reach up to VND240,000 per kilogram. Proximity to Hung Yen influences the price, as seen in Hanoi where the cost is slightly lower. The unique size of these litchis, with some weighing equivalent to 12-13 litchis per kilogram, contrasts with the standard litchi size of 28-30 litchis per kilogram. Originating from Phan Sao Nam commune, the cultivation of egg-shaped litchis has expanded, contributing to the local economy. The variety, known locally as 'vai ong Diem,' honors Nguyen Van Diem, who pioneered this litchi cultivation 150 years ago. The favorable soil conditions in the region have supported the growth of this variety, which is now harvested from early May, yielding 300-400 kilograms per tree. This cultivation method has proven to be lucrative for local farmers, with a hectare potentially generating a turnover of VND500 million annually.
