Mexico leads fruit and vegetable consumption in Latin America

According to a survey conducted by Statista Consumer Insight in 2023, Mexico has the highest consumption of fruits and vegetables in Latin America, as 86% of its adult population regularly incorporates these foods into their diet. This high percentage reflects a trend towards healthier eating habits and greater access to fruits and vegetables, facilitated by the country's local production.

Mexico's geographical and weather conditions favor cultivating a wide range of fruits and vegetables, including high-quality berries and avocados, reinforcing its position as an important exporter of these products.

In the global scenario, Mexico and Argentina share the first place in fruit and vegetable consumption, with 86% of their adult populations reporting diets rich in these foods. Brazil follows closely behind with the same percentage. In Europe, Spain and Italy also have a high consumption of fruits and vegetables, as approximately 80% of their populations follow diets influenced by the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in these products.

Despite being one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables, China shows a lower domestic consumption, as less than 60% of its population consumes these foods regularly. This phenomenon could be related to the high cost of fruits in some regions of the country.

By comparison, in the United States, approximately two-thirds of the adult population consumes fruits and vegetables regularly, a percentage that, although significant, is lower than in Mexico and Argentina. These data underscore the differences in eating habits between nations, influenced by various economic and cultural factors.
