Many produce promotions for Memorial Day

For Memorial Day, retailers took the opportunity to promote delicious and nutritious produce items. Consider creating a refreshing fruit salad with a mix of cherries, strawberries, and watermelon.

Total ad numbers this week were 273,105, a 4% decrease from last week's total of 283,079. The total for the same week last year was 2% lower at 267,087. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 137,063 (50% of all ads), onions and potatoes 20,203 (7%), vegetables 97,135 (41%), and herbs 870

The number of ads for organic produce was 31,235, 11% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included cherries at 16%, peaches at 20% and strawberries at 11%. Significant decreases included only pineapples at 13%. There were significant changes in price for 5 lb bags of russet potatoes at 15% There were no significant changes for onions this week. Only corn had increases in price at 16%. Significant decreases included for vegetables only asparagus at 11%.
