Pakistan: Onion exports have exceeded $210 million for the first time

For the first time, Pakistan's onion exports have exceeded $210 million, with expectations to reach $250 million by the end of the year, marking a historic high for the country. The spokesperson for the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association highlighted this achievement, noting the unprecedented level of onion exports compared to any other fruit or vegetable product in Pakistan's history. From July 2023 to April 2024, the exports surpassed $210 million, previously matched only by oranges.

The increase in exports is linked to the ban on Indian onion exports, enabling Pakistani onions to penetrate major global markets, including the Far East and the Middle East. The spokesperson called for government action to extend the shelf life of onions to further leverage and expand these newfound market opportunities.
