Citrus growers in Florida maintain hopeful outlook for their industry

Despite the upcoming closure of Cutrale Citrus Juices USA's plant in Leesburg, resulting in the layoff of 117 workers, citrus growers in Florida maintain a hopeful outlook for their industry. Florida Citrus Mutual highlighted an increase in orange production, with a revised estimate of 17.8 million boxes for the current month, up from 15.85 million at the end of the 2022-23 harvest. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture adjusted its forecast, reducing the estimate by 1 million boxes.

Florida's citrus sector has faced challenges, including citrus greening and damage from Hurricane Ian in September 2022, as well as Hurricane Irma in 2017. Despite these setbacks, Matt Joyner, executive vice president and CEO of the growers' association, expressed optimism for recovery, emphasizing the need for time to rebuild. Historical data shows a peak production of 244 million boxes of oranges during the 1997-1998 season, contrasting with recent figures. The industry's resilience is tested as it navigates through these adversities.
