What's new for the Agrieuropa summer campaign

"We meet the requests of Italian retailers by introducing new products"

After a rather positive end of the winter season characterized by good consumption and prices, Agrieuropa from Terracina (Latina) is getting ready for the summer campaign with new products such as netted melons, trusting that the weather will be good.

"We are currently harvesting celeriac and parsley roots, which are in their first and third year, respectively. Although they are still being tested and are only niche products introduced to widen our assortment, demand has been interesting especially from Eastern Europe, with prices and consumption in line with the trend. We are expecting to finish the celeriac campaign in mid-June, while that of parsley roots should end in May," reports Alberto Nocera, president of Agrieuropa.

This cooperative produces, processes and packages vegetables in the heart of the Agro Pontino area in the Latina province and, more precisely in the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia and Pontinia on 400 hectares, 303 of which covered in greenhouses and around 100 of open fields.

During the winter campaign, the salad range (including lamb's lettuce, spinach, baby spinach and arugula) is joined by zucchini, parsley roots, daikon, turnips, celeriac, radishes and carrots, which are mostly destined to be exported. In the summer, the company deals mainly with zucchini (available all year round), cucumbers, watermelons and bell peppers.

"We will start harvesting yellow, red and green bell peppers, horn peppers and netted melons - newly-introduced this campaign - towards the end of the month. We have also more than doubled the area destined to cucumber cultivation, and we will continue harvesting them until October. We have also reduced the watermelon crops by 50 hectares, precisely to give more room to new products."

"As for watermelons, the campaign will start one week earlier than last year, so harvesting operations will begin in a few days' time. Of course, it is difficult to make a forecast as, just like for all other products, everything will depend on the weather." ì

Nocera also explains why it has widened its summer product range. "All these new products will be destined to Italian supermarkets, which we used to only supply with zucchini and watermelons in the summer. In 2023, we started supplying cucumbers at the request of retailers and, this year, they have asked us for the other products as well."
