Peru seeks to position itself as the world's eighth-biggest exporter of fruits

Peru aims to achieve exports worth 65 billion dollars before the end of the year, surpassing the 64.3 billion dollars achieved in 2023 and setting record exports for the fourth consecutive year. Despite a 0.5% drop in the Peruvian economy last season, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has an ambitious plan: to position Peru as the world's eighth-largest exporter of fruit, which would bring significant revenue for the country and contribute to its economic reactivation.

According to the 22ndAgricultural Export Lunch organized by the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Peru is currently the world's leading exporter of blueberries and quinoa in grain; the second largest exporter of fresh avocado, Amazonian chestnut, and ginger; and the third largest exporter of canned palmetto. In 2023, Peruvian fruit exports amounted to 5.68 billion dollars, ranking it the world's ninth biggest exporter of fruits. The expectation this year is to rank eighth.

According to Elizabeth Galdo, the head of Mincetur, the best-positioned Peruvian fruits in the world are blueberries, avocados, and grapes. Peru is Latin America's third largest exporter of fruits, behind Mexico and Chile. Agro-exports are boosting the country's economic and social development, with a growth of 13% in the first two months of the year, thanks in part to a 7.3% increase in fruit exports.

Peru has managed to position its agricultural products in 141 markets around the world. The United States and the European Union are the most important markets. Grapes and blueberries were the main fruits exported, generating record revenues in their categories. To strengthen the global presence of Peruvian agro exports, Mincetur plans to collaborate with the country's National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RREE), and Peru's Commercial Offices Abroad (OCEX) belonging to the Peruvian Promotion Commission for Export and Tourism (PromPerĂș). Technological innovation is another key factor in improving Peru's competitiveness in the world market.
