Upper Austria: Gemüsehof Mayr plans new production facility for 2,000 tons of vegetables

"Creating appropriate framework conditions aims to secure the continuation of domestic production"

When discussing vegetable farming in Upper Austria, Eferding immediately comes to mind. However, in the shadow of this well-known corporation, the innovative vegetable farming operation Ewald Mayr in Pupping is on an expansion path. The business was able to grow in the organic sector with the entry of son Daniel Mayr, and the concept of a new production facility – designed to accommodate everything from offices to employee apartments – was launched. With a capacity for 2,000 tons of vegetables in long-term storage and 600 pallet storage spaces in the refrigeration rooms, the goal is to boost self-sufficiency in vegetable supply. The new production facility is expected to be completed by fall 2024 and fully operational for the next season. Currently, around 200 hectares of farmland are being cultivated biologically and conventionally by approximately 60 employees, mixing vegetable and field crops.

"The demand is there, our self-sufficiency in vegetables is decreasing, and due to free trade, our products cannot be protected. Whether organic or conventional, only a regional awareness among customers and the creation of appropriate framework conditions can ensure the survival of local production," says farm manager Ewald Mayr in the LKÖ interview.
