Georgia is experiencing a notable surge in almond and walnut production, as stated by Tornike Lataria, director of the Association of Almond and Walnut Producers. He describes this as an emerging sector for the nation, with last year's harvest yielding premium-quality crops.
Lataria reveals that commercial farms in Georgia yielded approximately 2,000 tons of almonds and 2,500 tons of walnuts last year. These products were successfully exported to various destinations, including European countries, Turkey, Azerbaijan, China, and India.
Furthermore, Lataria notes a significant shift in the market dynamics, with local production dominating almond availability in the country. Previously, imported almonds commanded prices significantly higher than global market rates.
Despite initial challenges faced by farmers 7–8 years ago, Lataria emphasises that these have been addressed, leading to improved efficiency within the industry.
Looking ahead, the Association of Almond and Walnut Producers in Georgia is aiming to double walnut yields this year. Lataria underscores the importance of expanding export activities to sustain growth in the sector.
