Lemon prices soar in India due to production shortfall

As India grapples with rising temperatures, the lemon market is experiencing a significant surge in prices due to a production shortfall, especially in Karnataka, a major lemon-producing state. The cost for half a dozen lemons has escalated from Rs 20 to Rs 40. This increase is attributed to a nearly 40 percent reduction in lemon yields in Karnataka, contributing to a market-wide supply shortage.

Previously, large-sized lemons were priced at Rs 2,000 per 100 kgs in the wholesale market, a figure that has now risen to over Rs 7,000, marking a 350 percent price hike within a single month. Lemon cultivation, primarily in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, has been adversely affected by erratic rainfall and drought conditions, leading to a decrease in yields. This situation has resulted in a supply-demand imbalance, with traders warning of potential continued price escalations.
