California citrus growers can join program aimed at enhancing climate resilience and sustainability

Starting March 25, citrus growers in 11 California counties can join a program offering up to $200,000 for initiatives aimed at enhancing climate resilience and sustainability within the citrus industry. This opportunity arises from a $5 million grant awarded by the California Department of Food and Agriculture to the California Bountiful Foundation, the California Citrus Quality Council, and Xerces Society through the Healthy Soils Program Block Grant.

The California Bountiful Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity focused on science, research, and education affiliated with the California Farm Bureau, will manage the program. It encompasses webinars, technical assistance, translation services, and financial incentives for adopting practices that promote soil health, including cover cropping and reduced tillage, among others. The initiative aims to fund 20 to 45 projects over three years.

Dr. Amrith Gunasekara of the California Bountiful Foundation emphasized the program's ease of access for citrus growers and the comprehensive support offered. The initiative also prioritizes social equity, targeting assistance towards socially disadvantaged farmers, women, veterans, and small-scale operations across specified counties.
