India's Commerce Ministry has announced the approval for the export of 64,400 tonnes of onions, allocating 50,000 tonnes to Bangladesh and 14,400 tonnes to the UAE via the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL). The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a branch of the commerce ministry responsible for setting import and export regulations, detailed that the UAE would receive onion shipments in quarterly instalments of 3,600 metric tonnes.
"Export of 14,400 tons of onions, with a quantity ceiling of 3,600 MT (metric tons) quarterly, to UAE through NCEL is notified," stated the DGFT. Despite a general ban on onion exports aimed at stabilizing domestic markets, the government has made exceptions for these nations following their requests. The modalities for these exports to Bangladesh will be determined by the NCEL in coordination with the department of consumer affairs. This move comes after an export ban implemented on December 8 of the previous year, intended to improve local availability and control prices, is set to expire on March 31.
