Agriculture Dept targets over 2,000 tons in Harumanis mango harvest

The Perlis Agriculture Department has announced its aim to exceed 2,000 tons in the upcoming Harumanis mango season, with harvests commencing potentially in the third week of March.

Razali Saad, chairman of the Perlis Agriculture, Plantation and Food Industry Committee, highlighted the projection is grounded on the current flowering stage and spans across 1,612 hectares of fruit-bearing land out of 1,746 hectares dedicated to mango cultivation as of January. The expected increase in yield is attributed to an uptick in the number of fruit farmers to 2,693, alongside the addition of four new orchards.

Harumanis cultivators, especially those utilizing residential land, which accounts for about 10 to 15 percent of the total, are encouraged to wrap the fruits within eight weeks to preserve quality. The state's Agriculture Department is poised to offer support through educational programs and advisories to enhance fruit maturity and mitigate sourness, in addition to addressing challenges posed by new pests identified in specific locales within Perlis.
