In response to the unprecedented hike in garlic prices in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, reaching an all-time high of 400 to 500 rupees per kilogram, local farmers are adopting innovative security measures. The lucrative market value has led to instances of theft, prompting cultivators in Badnoor to protect their crops with CCTV installations. Pahul Deshmukh, a prominent garlic farmer from Badnoor, has invested in surveillance technology after suffering thefts.
"Earlier, a thief had stolen 8 to 10 kg of garlic from the field and was caught by the police later on, whereas, after this incident, I am protecting my field by installing CCTV cameras," Deshmukh stated. Having invested 2.5 mln rupees in garlic cultivation over 13 acres, Deshmukh's returns have nearly quadrupled. Furthermore, Pawan Chaudhary, another farmer, has seen significant profit margins, prompting him to also install CCTV cameras for crop security. This season's garlic price surge to over 300 rupees per kilogram marks a significant profit opportunity for local farmers, leading to the adoption of tech-based security measures for the first time.
