Study highlights mango consumption benefits for women of childbearing age and older adults

A recent US study, published in Nutrients, has shed light on the health benefits of mango consumption, particularly for women of childbearing age (WCA) and older adults. The study is part of a broader focus on nutritional equity, ensuring access to nutritious food for all, regardless of ethnicity, gender, life stage, or economic status.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), specific food guidance is necessary for different life stages. Pregnant women and older adults are two groups that require particular attention due to their unique nutritional needs and higher risk of health issues. Consuming a high-quality diet, including increased fruit intake, can significantly improve health outcomes for these groups.

The study found that mango consumers in both the WCA and older adult groups had a higher intake of several nutrients compared to non-consumers. Furthermore, mango consumption was associated with improved diet quality scores. The research suggests that incorporating mangoes into the diet could help address nutritional inadequacies in these groups.

Despite the benefits, the study found that fruit intake is still below recommended levels, particularly among WCA. The researchers call for further studies to understand the impact of individual fruits on meeting the nutritional needs of different age groups.
