In 2023, Philippine pineapple exports experienced a 5% growth, driven by rising shipments to China, in sync with the global trade uptrend forecast. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicated in its report that the Philippines, being the globe's second largest pineapple supplier, exported 611,873 tons of pineapples in the past year. This figure surpasses the 582,537 tons recorded the previous year.
The FAO stated, "Industry insiders revealed that the Philippines' pineapple exports to China profited from an increased demand for high-quality pineapples in China. In this context, the long shelf life, year-round production cycle, and appealing price-to-quality ratio of the MD2 pineapples, the principal variety grown in the Philippines, were particularly potent selling points."
According to preliminary data from January to July 2023, the country's pineapple shipments to China grew by 22 percent. China is the top consumer of Filipino pineapples, accounting for nearly 46 percent of the archipelago's total pineapple exports.
