Karnataka mangoes may hit market early as growers witness dry spell

Mangoes are grown in over 160,000 hectares in Karnataka, with the average mango yield being around 1.0 – 1.4 million tons per year. The production dropped to 700,000 – 800,000 tons over the last few years due to heavy rains. However, a dry spell is expected to boost the yield up to 1.5 million tons next year.

This dry spell, accompanied by a rise in temperatures has led to the early flowering of the trees, which increases the possibility of the fruit hitting the market as early as March. Growers are hopeful of reaping a good harvest if the dry spell continues for two more months.
