Colombian banana exporter Banacol is facing scrutiny over allegations of involvement in transporting large cocaine shipments to Italian organized crime. The high-profile company has been linked to an array of Colombian politicians, including former President Álvaro Uribe and Medellín’s elected mayor, Federico Gutiérrez.
Italian authorities reconstructed the timeline of a considerable shipment of 2,226 kilos of cocaine, concealed in banana boxes, transported to Europe in 2020 and 2021. The illicit operation saw a collaboration between the Italian drug cartel Ndrangheta, which controls 80% of cocaine traffic in Europe, and another Italian mafia group, Camorra. The cargo was prepared in Turbo, Antioquia, a region where Banacol operates.
