There is a possibility of a shortage of high-quality Ukrainian potatoes at the end of the season

Ukrainian potato farming has encountered significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions. Damaged and low-quality tubers from the new harvest have become a problem for producers.

A prolonged spring and temperature fluctuations have affected the quality and yield of potatoes. A crucial factor for producing high-quality potatoes is using resilient planting material and adherence to proper cultivation techniques. Pests and diseases have also become issues in adverse weather conditions. Despite the challenges, producers can achieve good quality and yield through proper technology adherence.

Professional growers have maintained or expanded their potato cultivation areas, while newcomers have exited the business due to low potato prices from the previous season. Private households attempted to retain their potato acreage but struggled to sell excess produce at high prices. This factor potentially will lead to a reduction in planting areas next year.

Export opportunities for Ukrainian potatoes are limited and depend on the situation in importing markets. The quality of Ukrainian potatoes is also a concern in external exports.

Labor shortages have become a problem for many potato farmers.

There is a possibility of a shortage of high-quality potatoes at the end of the season, which could drive up prices for those who can store the produce.

Currently, farmers are hoping for potato prices to increase to 0.25 - 0.30 euros per kilogram to cover their expenses and efforts. Ukrainian potato farming faces significant challenges, but preserving product quality and exploring new markets may be key strategies for overcoming these difficulties.
