Mexican papaya season is kicking off

Location could be an advantage to ship Mexican papayas to Europe

In recent weeks the new season for papayas has started in the southern region of Mexico, Quinatan Roo. Producer and Exporter Alejandro Alvarez of the company BioGuayab has started packing for the papaya export to Europe. Their production area is near the airport of Cancun, where various daily flights depart to the main European freight hubs, making it an ideal location for export.

“After doing some successful trials to Europe in the last season, Alvarez is convinced that the Mexico origin Formosa Papaya can compete with any other origin: “The taste is fantastic and the quality permits a long shelf life. Next to the trial shipments by air, we also tried out sea shipments last season, which looked very promising. With the reasonable transit time of approximately 18 days to Antwerp, the quality came out fine and at an attractive cost price,” he explained.

The ease of transporting both via air and sea makes Alvarez hopeful they can create a presence of the Mexican papaya in Europe. “In principle, we can produce year-round and up to 20 metric tons per week. Next to the local Mexican market and the traditional markets in the USA and Canada, we would like to expand to Europe because of the opportunity of being able to send from Cancun, with many options of direct flights to all Europe. On top of that, the Mexican papaya isn’t all that present yet in the European market, and we would like to develop the Mexican presence. The great opportunity of the direct line from México to Antwerp by boat makes it an interesting market for us.”

With more and more concerns for the environment and coming with that, the wish from retail organizations to limit imports via air shipments, the alternative logistic option via ocean freight can bring a solution. Pricewise, I think we’re very competitive with other sources. We expect similar prices to those of last year, although the strong Peso against the US Dollar is hurting.”

The sales in Europe are being made by Aztec Fruit, as a sales representative for BioGuayab.
