Opportunities for Vietnamese coconut in the US and China

Recently on August 08, 2023, news has been made public on the US opening the door to import fresh coconuts from Vietnam. As such, Vietnamese fresh coconut producers can start exporting immediately. According to Ms. Sally, sales/export manager at Vietnamese fruit exporter True Fruits, they will also shifting to this market. “Along with the US market, the next biggest market China also opened for Vietnamese coconuts. They're proceeding to survey the growing area to evaluate and analyse pest risks to the base to sign and get started late this year. Moreover, China has territory bordering Vietnam, which means the transportation is both easy and fast.”

Ms. Sally feels this is a great opportunity for them to raise the value of Vietnamese coconut. “Coconut is the main product of our company, so we always focus our resources to upgrade not only the quality, but also the appearance of the product. We have GlobalGAP and Grasp certificates, which could be adapted with the market's requirement. We also have a large factory located near the harvesting area of the coconuts, helping us to work directly with farmers. For that reason, we’re always ready for bulk orders, while still ensuring good quality and reasonable prices. We're able to provide the market with many convenient coconut models, such as easy open coconut, diamond coconut and green coconut.”

In recent years, Vietnam's coconut production has been constantly increasing, because the world demand for coconut is expected to increase by an average of 30 per cent per year, Ms. Sally explains: “According to the estimated quantity from 2020 to 2022, Vietnam's coconut production has increased by 26.6%. Particularly in the Ben Tre province, one of the coconut production leading provinces in the Mekong Delta. By the end of 2022, the province's total coconut acreage was over 78,000 hectares, an increase of 768 hectares with a total output estimated at 688 million coconuts a year. Of which the acreage of drinking coconut is about 15,850 hectares, accounting for 20.3 per cent of the total. More than 70 per cent of people in Ben Tre have their main economic income from coconut trees.”

The fact Vietnam can now export coconuts to the US had an immediate effect on the price of the product: “Right after the news came out that we could now officially export coconuts to the US, the price of fresh coconuts in the Mekong Delta region spiked again, after a quiet period. This made coconut growers extremely excited. Thus, in the future, Vietnam's coconut industry joining the billion-dollar group will not be far away. Next to coconuts, we also export large volumes of a variety of tropical fruits, such as pomelo, dragon fruit, durian and limes,” Ms. Sally concludes.
