Spanish growers gain foothold in Scandinavia

A few days before the end of the 2022-23 campaign, La Unión has managed to maintain its leading position in the Spanish fruit and vegetable sector and in Europe as a whole. Despite the current market difficulties, the company from Almeria has increased its marketing volume by 10% over the same period of the previous year. In this campaign, La Unión sales amounted to 340 million euro, compared to the 306 million it achieved in the previous campaign. In terms of value, the average price has increased by 9%, which has mitigated the sharp increase in costs, which, according to industry sources, stands at around 25%.

One of the company's most notable feats this year has been its expansion into new markets. La Unión has become a major player in Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, which account for nearly 2% of the company's turnover. The opening of these markets has meant marketing their products in the main local distribution chains.

The positive results of the company have a lot to do with the marketing of its line of frozen products, Long Fresh. The final turnover of Long Fresh in this campaign stood at 1.37 million euro, which places La Unión among the fastest-growing companies in the frozen vegetables sector in just two years. Moreover, the company has opted for the production of tropical products that already represent 2% of La Unión's total production.

If the forecasts are met, the company will grow by around 60,000 tons in the next two campaigns. To achieve this, it has developed a plan for attracting and retaining farmers.

Producers, the great beneficiaries
It's important to note that the farmer's average settlements increased by 11% over the previous year. Their profits also exceeded the average emoluments recorded in the sector, with an increase that ranged between 9% and 23%.

By products, the big beneficiary has been pepper with an average price that stood between 1.52 and 1.67 euro, i.e., 13% and 24% more than in the previous year, respectively. Tomato also registered a significant increase, which ranged between 9% and 15% depending on the variety analyzed.

These data show an improvement in the profitability of farmers, who faced a nearly 12% increase in production costs last year, according to sources in the sector.
