Tripura registered a bumper crop of mangoes, which has reduced the demand for imported mangoes from Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, agriculture and farmers welfare, minister Ratan Lal Nath said yesterday.
In Tripura, Amrapali, Himsagar Ambika, and Arunika have been cultivated across an area of 10,357 hectares, yielding an average mango of 5.09 tons per hectare besides local varieties. Farmers in various parts of the state have begun commercial mango cultivation and are already reaping profits, he said.
As part of the chief minister's Swanirbhar Parivar Yojana (self-reliant family), an initiative has been launched to distribute 1.5 million saplings of lemon, papaya, betel nut, banana and mango to one lakh families. The government has also set a target to cultivate palm oil on 2,000 hectares of land with an additional 1,300 hectares allocated for the cultivation of mangoes, jackfruit, oranges, pineapples and bananas, the minister added.
