The UP state government plans to reach out to potato buyers in Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh where the price of the crop is much higher than that in UP itself. The move, sources say, will help the state’s potato growers get prices higher than the procurement price of Rs 650 per 100 kgs as announced by the state government. Sources said that the horticulture department plans to auction potatoes "aggressively" in the "outside market" and the payment received would be channeled into the farmers' accounts.
A senior official in the horticultural department said that the state government has reached out to other states where market rates of potatoes are much higher than those in UP. At the same time, the cold storages have been alerted to step up measures to enhance storage capacity in the days to come. For this, the state government has decided to depute at least one person from the horticulture department in each of the cold storages across the state.
