The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a Rs 4 bln (€48 mln) project named `Promotion of vegetables’ to increase production and reduce dependence on imports. It government has set a production target of 596,000 tons in the next five years. Currently, Jammu and Kashmir has a high seasonal dependence on imports to meet vegetable demands. The union territory imports more than 318,000 tons of vegetables annually from states including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Under the aforementioned project, 1,100 new hi-tech greenhouses and 3,548 new poly-house-based vegetable nurseries will be established in various districts of Jammu and Kashmir for high-value vegetables.
For increasing the returns to framers, the project also focuses on the cultivation of exotic vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, lettuce, red cabbage and other varieties.
