With FAO support

Food price monitoring website launched in Uzbekistan

Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) announced the launch of an online tool for monitoring and analyzing food prices in Uzbekistan.

According to Spot.uz, the university has prepared a tool jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The parties previously agreed on the implementation of “a price and market information system, as well as related analysis, for agricultural value chains.”

The Uzbek Ministry of Agriculture is a strategic partner of the parties under the agreement. WIUT became the first FAO partner where a country-level tool was successfully installed on the spot.

Prices are monitored with a web-based tool that facilitates the dissemination and analysis of food price data. This mechanism will be an important tool to provide stakeholders with timely price information that can be used by the public.

The website is available in three languages – Uzbek, Russian and English. It includes data on 77 food products from markets since January 2019.

The WIUT Center for Applied Research, which cooperates with the State Statistics Committee and other ministries and departments of Uzbekistan, is responsible for supporting the new tool. The center collects data from the local retail market.

The tool is expected to support the government of Uzbekistan in implementing the Agricultural Development Strategy for 2020-2030. Reliable price information will increase market transparency, and competitiveness and ensure a more equitable distribution of income among market players.
