The Filipino Department of Agriculture has allotted some P100 million (€1.7 mln) to boost the country's onion production, as there is a continued shortage of white onions. The department targets to increase production to 279,270 tons from 229,539 tons from 2021 to 2025. It will also ensure ready markets for the produce of onion farmers' cooperatives and associations.
For 2022, the agency allocated P47.48 million for the provision of seeds, seedlings and fertilizers as part of the implementation of the DA High Value Crops Development Program. At least P35.673 million was also allocated for the establishment of onion production and post-harvest facilities, irrigation network services and farm production machinery and equipment.
The program also funded a package of technology training worth P1.4 million and onion production research activities amounting to P10.048 million. The DA is considering partnering with farmers in Visayas and Mindanao to expand local onion production and assist them with market linkage activities.
