Many vegetables and greens have got costlier over the past few days in Bengaluru. In fact, in a deviation from the trend, this time, prices of vegetables and greens haven’t come down in the month of ‘Ashada’ (considered to be inauspicious). Stakeholders fear the price rise may be unrelenting for the next couple of months.
Continuous rain and overcast skies for more than 20 days have ruined horticultural crops around Bengaluru, affecting supply at vegetable markets such as Yeshwantpur, KR Market and Madivala. The sudden short supply has pushed up prices of most veggies and greens by 50-70%, according to traders at Kalasipalya wholesale vegetable market.
Devaraj, chairperson of Hopcoms: “There is hardly any agricultural activity around Bengaluru. Due to continuous rain and cloudy weather, farmers were unable to prepare land for cultivation. We have not seen good-quality carrots from Anekal or Kolar areas. This scarcity has triggered price rise.” He said prices of vegetables and greens will continue to go up for the next two months, affecting consumers.
Similarly, onion and potato wholesalers at Yeshwantpur too are worried about flood scenarios across the northern plains and Maharashtra.
