On Saturday, fruit growers and traders staged a protest at Fruit Mandi Sopore in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir over the alleged halting of fruit-laden trucks along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to the security measures taken in wake of Amarnath Yatra.
The growers said the early varieties of fruit- plum, apricot, peach, pear and Hazratbali apple-have limited shelf life and should reach mandis outside J&K as soon as possible and the halting of the trucks along the highway was incurring heavy financial losses.
Presently, the harvest of early varieties is in full swing. The President of Fruit Association Apple town Sopore, Fayaz Ahmad Malik alleged that the trucks drivers bringing fruits to other parts of the country are stopped along the highway due to the security arrangements which are in place for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
