Getir arrives in the U.S. promising ultrafast grocery deliveries around 10 minutes
Getir, the pioneer of ultrafast grocery delivery, announced it has started operations in Chicago for the 1st time, debuting its ultrafast grocery delivery services to the United States. Further expanding its U.S. presence, Getir plans to roll out its services to the New York and Boston metropolitan regions by the end of 2021.
US: SpartanNash sees 3rd-quarter rebound
Led by food distribution and retail, SpartanNash tallied sales gains in its fiscal 2021 3rd quarter atop strong COVID-driven growth a year ago. For the 12-week quarter ended October 9, net sales totaled $2.07bln, up 0.6% from $2.06bln a year earlier, SpartanNash reported. The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company noted that decreased sales in its military wholesale unit partially offset higher sales in its food distribution arm and comparable-sales growth in its retail division.
U.S. online grocery sales level off in October
Online grocery sales held firm in October, but the dollar ring for pickup and delivery orders well exceed pre-pandemic basket sizes, strategic advisory firm Brick Meets finds. For October, the U.S. online grocery market edged up 1.3% to $8.1bln from $8bln in September, when month-to-month sales fell 7%, according to the latest Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey. October’s total, too, stands at the same level as a year ago. Similarly, both pickup/delivery and ship-to-home dollar sales in October ended up at about the same level in September, at $6.4bln and $1.7bln, respectively.
US: Meijer partners with Dow to recycle plastic bags into parking-lot pavement
Supercenter and grocery retailer Meijer has teamed with Dow to roll out a new paving technique using recycled plastic bags to create a more durable parking lot for Meijer’s Holland, Michigan supercenter. This recycled polymer modified asphalt (RPMA) parking lot is a 3-phase pilot project that used approximately 12,500 pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR), which is the equivalent weight of 944,000 plastic grocery bags.
US: Instacart offers new ways for consumers to save on grocery shopping
Online grocery giant Instacart is rolling out a slew of new features on its app that the company says are “designed to make online grocery shopping more affordable” - including a Deals Tab and exclusive savings for Instacart Express members, a reduced-cost and free delivery option and a “Dollar Store Hub” destination on the Instacart marketplace.
US: GrubMarket acquires Oakport Transportation to expand transportation and logistics capabilities amidst disruptions to global supply chains
GrubMarket announced it has completed the acquisition of Oakland, CA-based Oakport Transportation, a provider of comprehensive trucking and logistics services that stores and ships produce throughout California, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and Nevada, plus selected routes throughout the rest of the U.S. for certain seasonal items. GrubMarket will leverage Oakport's facilities and logistics networks to address the supply chain challenges introduced by recent trucking shortages, route congestion and skyrocketing consumer demand for fresh food.
Austria: SPAR’s investment plans for its international business
SPAR Austria intends to push its international business through increased expansion and investment. The company has detailed its strategy in an article in a renowned retail publication, noting that acquisitions are not excluded. As the market leader in the domestic food retailing business, SPAR Austria continues to drive its international business in Northern Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary, currently realising a total turnover of €6.2 billion in these countries, according to LebensmittelZeitung.
FamilyMart Malaysia launches ‘Food Superstores’ format
Japan’s FamilyMart is making strong inroads into Malaysia, offering a new concept in retail with the focus on fresh food, ruffling the convenience store sector which has been largely dominated by 7-Eleven and MyNews. The world’s 2nd-largest convenience store chain after 7-Eleven has redefined the concept and has gained more foot traffic to its Japanese-style konbini since it opened its first outlet in Malaysia in 2016.
RIMI Baltic announces appointment of new chief executive
RIMI Baltic, part of Sweden's ICA Gruppen, has announced the appointment of Giedrius Bandzevicius as its new chief executive. Bandzevicius, who currently holds the position of country manager for RIMI in Lithuania, succeeds Edgar Sesemann in the role. Sesemann, who spent 14 years at RIMI Baltic and 23 years in total with ICA Gruppen, has decided to retire. RIMI Baltic comprises 283 wholly-owned stores plus 20 e-commerce stations in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The retailer reported combined sales of SEK16.37bln (€1.65bln) in 2020.

Poland: Eurocash sees marginal increase in sales in 3rd quarter
Polish wholesaler Eurocash has reported a 1% increase in consolidated sales in the 3rd quarter of its financial year, to PLN7.03bln (€1.52bln). The group said that sales in its wholesale segment came in at PLN5.26bln (€1.14bln), approximately the same level as last year, while its retail segment sales increased by more than 2%.
Chinese web giant opens 1st store in the Netherlands
The Chinese internet giant JD.com opened its first physical store in Europe on Thursday 11 November. Leiden (Bètaplein) had that scoop. The store is called Ochama - to avoid confusion with sports store JD Sports - and sells both food and non-food. JD is one of the largest online stores in the world and only has to tolerate Amazon and Alibaba.

Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize has announced its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by no later than 2040 (scope 1 and 2) and across its entire supply chain, product development and services network (scope 3) by 2050.
