Sales of Huelva blueberries started with reduced volumes in January, increasing little by little in the months of February and March. In April and May, the marketed volume was below the average of the past campaigns between 2017 and 2019.
The current campaign started with prices well below those registered in previous campaigns. The price registered in January was 29,7% lower than the average reached in the campaigns from 2017 to 2019 and 21,0% lower in February, compared to the same parameter. In March the price remained below 10,9%. Prices rose in April and May, reaching 25% above past averages. The average price of blueberries in the 2020/21 campaign was € 4,33 / kg, 4,5% lower than that registered in the 2019/20 campaign (€ 4,53 / kg).
The province of Huelva has the highest blueberry production in Spain, producing 95% of the total. It is the largest producing area in Europe at the level of early fruit. According to projections by European experts, blueberry consumption in Europe could multiply exponentially in the next decade and increase demand for the product by five times, easily reaching 700,000 tons per year of consumption in the region.
