The blueberries from production areas in Shandong have already been on the Chinese market for more than one month. The retail season of greenhouse blueberries is almost over, and the price is coming down. Manager Liu, a spokesperson for Shandong Qingsen Zhenpin Fresh Fruit Supply Co., Ltd., recently talked about current conditions in the Chinese blueberry market.
"The blueberry season in Shandong begins when their blueberries enter the market in March. The weather conditions were particularly great this year. The production volume is quite stable," said manager Liu. "Shandong has greenhouse blueberry plantations as well as glasshouse and open field blueberry plantations. The blueberries from greenhouse plantations are the first to enter the market and they have dominated the market for close to one month. Their production volume is small and their price rather high around 45-55 yuan [6.99-8.54 USD] per 0.5 kg. Their market conditions are quite good."
When asked about his market predictions for the next few weeks, manager Liu replied, "I expect the price to drop by 5 yuan [0.78 USD] per 0.5 kg in the next two weeks. After glasshouse blueberries enter the market in larger volumes the price will come down even further."
Shandong is an important blueberry production area. The conditions are excellent for blueberry cultivation. The coastal climate is mild and well-suited for blueberry production. The blueberries from Shandong are sweet and delicious. However, the import volume of blueberries is growing and so is the overall surface area devoted to domestic blueberry plantation. Competition in the Chinese blueberry market is becoming fierce.
