Wakayama prefecture; Japan's biggest producer of mandarin oranges

Wakayama prefecture, south of the city of Osaka, offers an unexpectedly diverse abundance of flavors. Not only is it the birthplace of Japanese soy sauce, but it is also Japan's biggest producer of mikan and the prefecture's Arida Mikan is one of the top mandarin orange brands in Japan.

The sweet mikan, or mandarin orange, is a prized fruit in Japan. And that's not an exaggeration. A crate of these fruits once fetched over one million Japanese yen (or $9,600) in an auction. In addition to mikan, Wakayama is a major producer of other fruits like persimmons, peaches and kiwis, leading many to refer to it as Japan's ‘Fruit Kingdom’.
