An increase of produce from Pakistan is affecting the fruit and vegetable business in Tajikistan over this past week. It is particularly noticeable in the case of two consumer products: mandarins and cucumbers.
The most anticipated is the seasonal start of mandarins from Pakistan. Although mandarins are not a food staple, from December to February, it is the cheapest fruit found on the tables of most Tajik citizens.
Market forces note that with the beginning of the Pakistani mandarin season, consumption of apples, grapes, mandarins, and oranges from Turkey and other countries decrease.
The second important product from Pakistan is made up of cucumbers. Tajik markets are filled with cheap Pakistani cucumbers. The products are neatly packed in plastic boxes. This is a big plus for the population because in recent weeks there has been price increases for greenhouse products due to cold weather.
