Chinese soft-seed pomegranates available in early August

The supply period of plums from Sichuan, where a large number of production areas and varieties can be found, can last up to about two months. The varieties that are currently on the market include Wuyuecui and Yinghong.

"This year, we expect to sell about 500,000 kilos. Half a month ago, prices were quite low. Now, we are already at the end of the plum season and prices have picked up as a result of the relationship between supply and demand,” Ms. Liu, the head of Chengdu B-guo Agriculture, said. “However, affected by the current climate, the plum market this year in general is not as good as in previous years. The purchase price is about 40% lower than the lowest seen last year.”

This year, Sichuan B-guo Agricultural Co., Ltd. has been vigorously exploring online sales channels. "During the Covid-19 outbreak, our online sales increased significantly. Although the market is now fully open, consumers have developed the habit of online shopping from the past few months. We have noticed that while our offline channels are gradually recovering, our online order volume has not decreased significantly. To this end, we have re-deployed our market strategy and plan to expand the sales of several new e-commerce platforms in the second half of the year. Our shipment volume from online group-buys in merely three days can be ten trucks,” the Manager said.

Chengdu B-guo Agriculture has a growing center of 1,000 mu dedicated to pomegranates in Huili, Sichuan. Tunisian Red Diamond is the company's well-known pomegranate brand. "Soft seed pomegranates are to become available in August, and our sales volume this year is expected to be about 3 million kilos. However, restricted by the overall climate, we expect the purchase price this season to be about 2-3 yuan lower than last year."

In addition to its own growing center, the company’s processing plant is also equipped with automatic processing and sorting equipment. "I believe that automation is a guarantee for quality,” Liu said. “A challenge that the pomegranate market in China faces is standardised operations at the origin as well as the market. Our goal for the next few years is to integrate the resources of pomegranate production areas in Sichuan and avoid vicious market competition through technical support for farmers in growing and formulating standardised harvest and packaging systems. In terms of sales, we plan to expand our sales network, work with businesses that require standardization, promote direct supply from the production areas, and create a brand for Sichuan soft Seed pomegranates.”
