Mandarin oranges in western Japan have fetched a record price of 100,000 yen (€830) in the fruit’s first auction of the season.
An original variety of oranges grown in western Japan fetched a record high 100,000 yen apiece at the first auction of the season for Obarabeniwase mandarins, which took place at Takamatsu City Central Wholesale Market.
The greenhouse-grown citrus fruit is known for its deep orange color and sweetness. The price for a box of 25 highest-quality oranges came to 2.58 million yen. They weighed about 550 kilograms. The shipment of the mandarins will run through early August.
