Analyst Tang Ke, the bureau chief of the Economic Information Bureau, part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, recently announced that vegetable prices reached a record high in the first half of this year. However, the vegetable price began its seasonal decline in September when autumn vegetables began to enter the market in large volumes. The average wholesale price for Chinese vegetables is now 1.8% below the average level for the last three years. The price of fruit showed a similar development. The prices started high but dropped in the second half of this year. Prices began to fall in July when such seasonal summer fruits as watermelons and muskmelons entered the market in large volumes. Later, the market supply further increased with grapes and apples. The price continued to fall and is now back to normal.
According to Tang Ke, agricultural market supply is sufficient and stable in the third quarter of this year. The overall price index is falling, which is mainly a result of the prices of vegetables and fruit returning to normal levels.
