Technical convention of World Pear Forum will focus on plant protection problems

This year the technical convention of the World Pear Forum, the international forum that will be held during FuturPera and organized in association with CSO Italy, will be dedicated to the plant protection problems that have marked a difficult production campaign - the OI Pera (Interprofessional pear Organization) has estimated an average drop of 34%. The focus will be on developing a more effective defense strategy against the brown marmorated stink bug and the more aggressive forms of brown spot disease that have been causing considerable damage to production for some years now. The fight against plant diseases will be the subject of many meetings and technical focus groups organized by the exhibiting companies. These are crucial issues for a sector in danger that has to face strong competition from other growing countries and attack the global market with a good product range and excellent quality.

Albano Bergami, member of the FuturPera Board and Deputy Chairman of OI Pera: “It is certainly a difficult year in terms of production because the climate conditions have not been conducive to the correct vegetation of the plants, the numbers of flowers were low and the frequent rain caused various problems from a phytosanitary perspective. The product quantity is down by a third and naturally the entire supply chain is suffering. Therefore, we have decided to transform our main technical convention into a strategic forum, an opportunity to join forces and find solutions for overcoming the gap in production of this campaign.

"All of the organizational staff of the event are carefully evaluating the general needs of pear growers, the part of the production chain that is particularly troubled, in order to develop a program of targeted interventions for the general improvement of production. This means talking about climate imbalance and orchard management, effective plant protection, new planting methods, with an eye on those ‘of the past’ - used a few decades ago - to evaluate the best choice in order to obtain a good product while containing production costs. We are at a turning point because it is only possible to overcome such a complicated situation by working together, with clear and shared goals. We believe that this edition of FuturPera may be the ‘Zero point’ for the pear growing supply chain, not only for finding out about the latest news in the sector thanks to the presence of companies that are always at the forefront, but also as an opportunity for general reflection, to pick up again and head towards a strong and concrete revival of the sector” concluded Bergami.

The third edition of FuturPera that will be held at Ferrara Fiere from 28 to 30 November is organized by Ferrara Fiere e Congressi and OI Pera (Interprofessional pear Organization) in association with CSO Italy, the contribution of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the support of Bper Banca.
