Durian supply from Thailand to Shanghai fruit markets gradually increased in August. The price already dropped by 30%-40%. The price of Thai durian is at its lowest point in years. The most delicious Thai durian, Mon Thong, only cost 16.8 yuan [2.38 USD] per 0.5 kg.
Yuan Yaxiang, secretary of the Shanghai Fruit Association, stated that Chinese consumption of durian has grown by more than 30% per year in the last 10 years. Durian consumption in the first half of this year was 40% greater than in the same period last year. Shanghai is the largest consumer of durian in China.
Durian from Thailand begin to enter the markets in Shanghai around the middle of May every year. The supply season continues until the middle of September. Even though durian are still for sale after September, the supply volume drastically declines. The peak period of durian sales is in August when the supply volume is the largest. Since the supply volume of Thai durian was much greater than before, the price subsequently dropped to a new low.
The price is expected to rise again in late September because the supply volume will significantly decline.
