Popular yet prices falling

China: Large volumes of local blueberries available

In the past decade, the blueberry cultivation area in China has been doubling year after year, rapidly expanding. China's blueberry cultivation area and production have increased rapidly, now ranking fourth in the world, shared Li Weilin, Vice President at Nanjing Forestry University. With increasing production, blueberry prices have remain stable.

Compared to fruits such as Fuji apples, Kyoho grapes, and watermelons, whose average prices last month increased by 34.5% year on year, the price of blueberries actually showed a steady if decreasing trend. Compared with the general unit price of over one hundred yuan half a kilo a few years ago, the current price of about 60 yuan per half a kilo is more affordable and continues to fall.

Although the blueberry market is promising, it is not easy to “mine” this blueberry “gold mine”. Some insiders expressed concern that there have been problems in many regions where farmers are expanding plantings blindly, without taking into consideration the natural conditions, cultivation techniques and other factors required by blueberry cultivation. The fact that different levels of techniques are used in growing blueberries has also led to large differences in fruit qualities. At the same time, due to the insufficient level of planting techniques, the average yield of blueberries in China is low, with the average yield per acre only 1/4 of that of the United States.
