Due to favorable climatic conditions, Tajikistan agroproducers could successfully sow the land with melons and they now have already started what looks to be a good harvest.
According to the Plant Production Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan, this year the melon crops were planted on an area of 18006 hectares. "So far, from 2,752 hectares, some 2,187 tons of melons and gourds were harvested," the department said, adding that these figures exceeded last year’s figures.
In Tajikistan, there are about 70 varieties of melons and about 15 varieties of watermelons. The most common varieties of melons are “Sabzak”, “Shakarpalak”, “Zartur”, “Gulobi Zard”. The first crops of melons in Tajikistan are beginning to be harvested in the south of the country - in the Khatlon region, where it is warm enough compared to other regions of the republic. Then they start harvesting in Sogd oblast, areas of republican subordination and in the Rasht zone.
Today, in each outlet one can buy sweet, juicy watermelons. For example, a watermelon weighing 7-8 kg can be purchased for 10 somoni ($ 1.05). In addition, small melons are sold in the markets, which are superior to imported fruits in taste and medicinal qualities. They can be purchased at 3-4 somoni ($ 0.34-0.42) per share. The cost of ordinary melons starts at around 10 somoni.
