China: Reduced volume but higher prices, for lychees from Dongguang

The first early-season lychee varieties enter the Chinese market every year around April. Lychees enjoyed a bumper harvest last year, and the price became quite reasonable. How will the lychee market in Dongguan develop this year? Zhao Jiqing, president of the Dongguang Lychee Association, explains that the lychee trees grew excessively as a result of weather conditions and the bumper harvest last year. The blossom rate is relatively low this year and also one week late in comparison with last year. The lychees will therefore enter the market one week late this year. The Flavor of Guilin and Rice Cake lychee are expected to enter the market in the last week of June.

According to Zhao Jiqing, the main reason for the low blossom rate this year is warm weather. In addition, the bumper harvest last year is another reason for the low blossom rate this year. This historical bumper harvest exhausted the nutritional reserves of lychee trees, causing them to grow excessively instead of producing flowers.
