The wholesale price of potatoes in the Xinfadi Market is currently 1.2-1.6 yuan [0.18-0.24 USD] per 0.5 kg. The previous price was 1.3-.19 yuan [0.19-0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is a price decrease of 12.5% in one week.
The price of fresh potatoes also fell at the beginning of March, but that decline was much smaller than around this time last year. There are two main reasons for this development: first, the supply volume of fresh potatoes from Yunnan is larger this year than last year. The surface area devoted to potato plantation expanded by 15%-20%. This resulted in an opening price that was around 20% lower than last year. Second, the volume of potatoes stored in warehouses last autumn and winter was relatively small. Last weekend, the price of winter-storage potatoes increased by 33% in comparison with last year. This in turn propped up the price of fresh potatoes.
