Price of Chinese lotus root takes a dive

The weather has improved in recent days and the price of some vegetables increased, while the price of others dropped. The price of leaf vegetables came down slightly, while the price of lotus roots, which had previously shown a great rise, dropped relatively hard. The previous average price of 5.5 yuan [0.82 USD] per kg came down 11.82% to 4.85 yuan [0.72 USD] per kg.

The price of lotus roots greatly increased in February because continuous rainfall complicated harvest and transport, and the high cost price of labor and transport further increased the price. Now that the weather has improved, the price naturally came down. Even though the price fell, it is still 61.67% higher than the average price of 3 yuan [0.45 USD] per kg around this time last year.

The purchase price of lotus roots is around 3.6-4 yuan [0.54-0.60 USD] per kg. Around this time last year the purchase price was 1.8-2.2 yuan [0.27-0.33 USD] per kg. The main reason for difference is a decrease in surface area devoted to lotus root plantation.
