Vegetable price on the rise in Hainan as cold weather arrives

Data from the Hainan Price Bureau shows that the price of vegetables constantly increased as a result of cold weather and the holiday period. The average retail price of 10 kinds of vegetables being monitored is 3.58 yuan [0.53 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is an increase of 6.65% in comparison with last week.

This is traditionally the peak season for vegetable production in Hainan, but a continuous stream of cold weather has lowered temperatures and brought excessive rainfall, which reduced local vegetable production. This situation is particularly severe in north and central Hainan. Vegetable demand exceeds supply and the price constantly rises. The increased price of local vegetables also pushes the price of vegetables supplied from outside. The meteorological department predicts that the weather in Hainan will gradually warm up again, and the price of vegetables will then come down, but in the short-term the price will remain high.
