Price increase for seasonal fruits in Fuzhou

In Fuzhou the price of seasonal fruits such as navel oranges, pears, and apples increased in January in comparison with the same month last year. The price increase reached as much as 20%-30% for some fruits.

A representative for several supermarkets in Fuzhou stated that the main reason for this development was a decrease in production volumes in major production areas of apples, navel oranges, and bananas. For example, the overall production volumes of apples decreased by more than 10 million tons last year as a result of cold weather in spring; Gannan navel oranges suffered from citrus greening disease and their estimated production volume is reduced by 30%.

People in the industry stated that the price of many fruits is already in a high position and the likelihood that prices will rise even further is small. After all, there is an abundance in fruit varieties. There are as much as 7 or 8 different kinds of oranges and tangerines, and if the production volume of one is reduced, then there is always the probability that the production volume of another has grown, which means that the overall price remains stable.
