Thousands of truckers at the Manila Port Area have started a week-long protest by stopping operations this Monday, November 19. The massive protest action is in opposition to the impending phase out of trucks and the worsening problem of container congestion at Manila Port Area.
Joining the truckers are brokers who are also suffering from the inconveniences of overloaded ports.
Truck drivers parked their vehicles along Road 10 of the port with banners showing their grievances. The protesters plan to extend the truck holiday in the next five days until this Friday. However, they warned to prolong the protest action if the government will not act on their concerns.
According to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), the volume of container traffic in the port area increased by 9% or equivalent to 4.3 million 20-foot equivalent units due to domestic trade. Meanwhile, foreign trade has already contributed an additional 8% or 2.5 million 20-foot equivalent units which resulted in thousands of containers stuck in ports in Manila and Camanava.
