Bas Klemans, Wilko Fruit:

"Florida grapefruit sales going well despite high dollar"

Wilko Fruit has been offering grapefruit from Florida for about three weeks now. "The market is good, the prices are good, it's all going well," says Bas Klemans. He says the true fans are willing to pay the higher price for it. "Florida offers the best grapefruit available in the world. It's one of the healthiest types of fruit there is."

Still, not everything is going smoothly. "Due to the citrus greening, it's becoming more difficult each year for the growers in Florida to send suitable volumes to the European market. There are also Turkish and Spanish grapefruit in the market, but Florida still has the most ideal climate to grow the Star Ruby grapefruit. Clients take the skin damage for granted. That should never be a reason to reject Florida grapefruit."

Stable
"All in all, sales are going well. Demand is good and stable. We have regular clients for the thick sizes. They are always gone quickly. The domestic market is also playing along nicely, and there's also demand from clients in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Scandinavia," Bas says.

The detrimental effect of grapefruit on medication against high blood pressure aren't seen as a danger to sales by the seller. "I'm assuming that people who take medication, know what they can and cannot eat. For the vast majority of consumers, grapefruit consumption is actually very healthy."
