These are supplemented by the Dutch supply in the summer season. The importer has been self reliant for around eighteen years. The tomato trader has been supplying to a number of European buyers "all alone" in the offices of P. Solleveld in Massdijk. "I always say: it's not about who you are, but who you know!"

He had left the import of tomatoes from the Canary Islands up to his fellow importers since the 2010/2011 season. "There were so many importers on the market at one point, that I decided I would be better off buying the tomatoes at the Rotterdam market. The number of importers has decreased which has made it more manageable. A large portion of the Canary imports are taken from Fortuna Frutos, Continental Fruit Importers, Anaco, Zoutewelle and Combilo. It is easier for producers to protect their trade." Paul feels confident about the season. "It was a rough start due to quality issues, but the last boat looked pretty good."
During the last two years, Paul has also been selling the Intense-tomato from Spain during the winter season. This plum tomato from Nunhems is denser which makes it a handy tomato for cutting into slices without losing its shape or juice. "The demand is good for this tomato. I have contracts running within and outside of the Netherlands. The acreage has been increasing bit by bit and it is strictly monitored. Such a niche market is quickly saturated."
