Chile to increase avocado exports to Europe 6%

Chilean avocado exports to Europe will increase by 6 percent this season. Adolfo Ochagavía president of the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee said the country expected to send about 34,000 tons to Europe, compared to 32,000 tons that were sent last year.

The Chilean Hass Avocado Committee anticipates that Europe will receive more avocados from Chile due to increased competition in the U.S. market from Mexico and Peru. The group noted that exports will reach 34,000 tons compared to 32,000 tons last season. "Chilean fruit has a good reputation, with good postharvest performance" said Adolfo Ochagavía to a South American site.

Chilean entrepreneurs are convinced that opportunities to sell are better in Europe, as competition in the U.S. is high. However, Chile entrepreneurs recognize that the American market pays more, but the EU market accepts 16-18 guage. The reason Chile is looking at Europe is becuase of Peru`s avocado market penetration since "Chile will have more difficulty competing with Peru in the U.S. market," pointed out Ochagavía. Yet, he warns his Chilean businessmen when he says that the entry of cheap avocado from Israel until January could harm the positioning of Chilean supply, according fyh.
